In Egypt's Alexandria demonstrators storm state security headquarters

CAIRO (Itar-Tass) - Hundreds of demonstrators on Friday
stormed the headquarters of the state security agency in the northern
capital of Egypt, Alexandria. Reportedly, the daylong peaceful
demonstration, attended by tens of thousands, turned into violent clashes
with security forces towards the evening.
The protesters were demanding the release of political prisoners and
the abolition of the state security apparatus, which many here blame for
crimes against the people during the previous regime - torture, murder and
intimidation. The protesters managed to get into the security service
building and set it on fire.
The clashes were provoked by security service members, who tried to
disperse the crowd with firearms and tear gas. The military intervened in
the riots, which caused about 50 casualties.
Similar protests are continuing in front of the state security
compound in Cairo's Giza neighborhood. There are reports of clashes
between protesters and security service personnel.
