Medvedev to hold Karabakh talks with leaders of Armenia, Azerbaijan

MOSCOW (Itar-Tass) - The process of Nagorno-Karabakh
settlement, in particular, stabilization along the line of engagement,
will be the focus of attention at a meeting the presidents of Russia,
Azerbaijan and Armenia Dmitry Medvedev, Ilkham Aliyev and Serzh Sargsyan
will hold in Sochi on Saturday.
"The process of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict would benefit a great
deal from stabilization of the situation along the engagement line," said
a representative of the Kremlin staff. "The heads of states can exchange
views on the implementation of the Astrakhan statement, which stipulates
that the settlement of the conflict through political and diplomatic means
will require further efforts to strengthen the ceasefire and
confidence-building measures in the military sphere."
"It is expected that during the upcoming talks between the leaders of
the three countries there will be further discussion of the main
principles of the Nagorno-Karabakh settlement," said the Kremlin official.
"More favorable conditions for this are created by the Joint Statement of
the heads of delegations to the OSCE Minsk Group and the presidents of
Azerbaijan and Armenia, made on the sidelines of the OSCE summit in Astana
on December 1, 2010, which calls upon the leaderships of Azerbaijan and
Armenia to focus on resolving contentious issues and points out that the
only way to achieve peace between the conflicting parties is through
negotiations."
The Kremlin said Russia's principled position regarding the
Nagorno-Karabakh conflict settlement remained unchanged.
"The parties to the conflict should not be forced into accepting any
formulas dictated to them from outside. The main responsibility for the
final choice should rest with the Azerbaijanis and Armenians," said the
Kremlin official. "Russia is ready to support the solution to the problem
that will satisfy all parties involved, and if a compromise is reached, to
act as a guarantor of the settlement," he said. Russia believes that only
the solution that will restore stability and tranquility to the Caucasus
will be viable."
Saturday's meeting will be the eighth in the trilateral format. Last
time the leaders gathered in Astrakhan on October 27, 2010. And the first
such conversation took place in Barvikha on November 2, 2008.
