Tap India`s Space Tech To Solve Natural Disasters
NEW DELH (Bernama) - Asean and India should jointly set up a space-technology-aided disaster management centre to monitor natural calamities in the region, said Malaysia's special envoy on infrastructure to India S. Samy Vellu.
Speaking at the conclusion of the Delhi Dialogue III session here Friday, he said Asean could tap India's advanced expertise in space technology to manage pre and post disasters.
"India's supremacy in space technology is imperative for Asean countries, which are occasionally exposed to calamities and natural disasters that have direct impact on th eeconomic well being of Asean.
"As close partners, India and Asean could establish a space technology aided disaster management centre that will provide timely connectivity and information for strategic decision making and planning," he said in his address at the session.
Scientists at the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) have created a national disaster management system to deal with catastrophes in the country.
ISRO's Disaster Management Support (DMS) programme offers timely support and services from aero-space systems -- in both imaging and communications to handle calamities from cycloneS, droughts to earthquakes.
The two-day Delhi Dialogue was themed "Beyond the First Twenty Years of India-Asean Engagement".
