Malaysian Minister: Action Aganist Instigators Using Alternative Media

TEMERLOH (Bernama) - The government will take
stern action against those who use blogs and social media networks to instigate
the people to revolt against the government, Information Communication and
Culture Minister Dr Rais Yatim said.

He said the relevant authorities such as the Attorney-General's Chambers,
police and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) would
take action against anyone who go against the law.

"We are monitoring the use of alternative media such as Facebook and Twitter
and if the users are found to have crossed the line, I believe the
Attorney-General's Chambers or police or the MCMC will act against them," he
told reporters after opening a WiFi village in here Saturday.

Present were the ministry's secretary-general Kamaruddin Siaraf and state
information, science, technology and innovation executive councillor Mohd
Sharkar Shamsuddin.

Rais was asked to comment on the remark by Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin
Yassin yesterday, warning the opposition not to play with fire by instigating
the people to topple the government like what was happening in several West
Asian countries.

Rais said the people should not be influenced by such instigations because
the situation in the country was different from the situation in those
countries.

"The government cares for the people and the people won't be easily
instigated by these blog articles or comments," he said.

Asked on reports that opposition leaders had chased away members of the
mainstream media, including Radio Television Malaysia (RTM) crew members, from
their events, Rais said he was shocked to learn about the incident.

"When I heard that (Datuk Seri) Anwar (Ibrahim) chased away the media,
particularly RTM, I was shocked. I couldn't believe that a man of such position
in his party had resorted to chasing away the media. This is a reflection of
what's inside," he said.

He added that the media should continue to report things that the people
need to know.
