Flexi Working Hours, Absence Of Sexual Harrassment To Lure More Women Into ETP

PETALING JAYA (Bernama) - A code of conduct
that governs sexual harassment at the workplace and flexible working hours were
some of the issues discussed at the Strategic Reforms Initiatives (SRIs)
laboratories, aimed at encouraging more women participation in the Economic
Transformation Programme (ETP).

Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Senator Idris Jala said there
were currently six laboratories which discussed the 51 policy recommendations
build on the eight SRIs identified in the first part of the report on the New
Economic Model.

The laboratories conducted by the Performance Management and Delivery Unit
(Pemandu) involved 400 people who are discussing crucial issues and policies
between Jan 1 and end-March.

Idris, who is also Pemandu Chief Executive Officer, said out of 14
million women in the country, only 3.95 million were in the workforce and 1.2
million were currently pursuing tertiary education in universities.

"Many Malaysian women drop out of employment when they reach the
child-bearing age of 30 years. With these labs, we hope that we can create a
conducive environment for them and, at the same time, increase their
participation in the economy," he said in a talk on "Opportunities and Role of
Women In The ETP" at the two-day Malaysia-China-Asia Pacific Women's Economic
Summit here Friday.

The summit was held in conjunction with the 100th anniversary of
International Women's Day which falls on March 8.

The National Economic Advisory Council set forth 51 key policy measures
required to address cross-cutting barriers for Malaysia to reform into
a high-income, sustainable and inclusive economy by 2020.

It builds on the eight SRIs identified in the first part of the report, that
emphasises highly-skilled human capital, efficient public services, a
reinvigorated private sector and equal opportunities for all Malaysians.

Idris said the outcome of these laboratories on policy recommendations would
be revealed to the public, next month, after being presented to the Cabinet.
