ASTANA, March 5 (Itar-Tass) -- Kazakhstan's President Nursultan
Nazarbayev has been paying special attention to support of maternity and children, women's entrepreneurship and gender equality, he told the first congress of women adding that over ten coming years these issues would remain priorities.
"The World Economic Forum of 2010 said that Kazakhstan ranked 41-st among the world's countries in gender equality," Nazarbayev continued. "We are among fifty most developed countries in the world, and ahead of 14 EU states."
"Kazakhstan's women, according to experts' estimates, account for
about 40 percent of the country's GDP and make about 73 percent of all
teachers, 87 percent of all doctors and medical specialists, and 60
percent of all the budget sphere staff," he said. "The country's entire state management system is based on their professionalism."
The gender equality strategy till 2016 sets a task to reach 30 percent of women's representation in state authorities. At the same time, not a single woman runs a region or a city in Kazakhstan. Nazarbayev ordered the government and the presidential administration, the national commission on family and women affairs, the Nur Otan Party leadership "to work out a detailed action plan till 2016 to promote women to the decision-making level." The country will specify promising sectors of women's entrepreneurship, for which annual micro loans will reach about 13 million dollars beginning from current year.
Nazarbayev joked saying that Kazakhstan's women spend on their needs more money than the country spends on armaments.
"I want to open a state secret to you. As the minister of economic
development and trade reported to me, all expenses of our women on
themselves are more than the country is spending on armaments. It is not surprising, since women must have victories every day," he said.
He greeted women on the eve of the 8th of March (Women's Day) and
confessed that it is women "who inspire us for new achievements."
