Sabah Has Potential Of Becoming Islamic Propagation Centre

KOTA KINABALU (Bernama) - The east Malaysian
state of Sabah has the potential of becoming the centre of the Islamic
missionary movement on the island of Borneo, said Islamic Development Department
(Jakim) director-general Wan Mohamad Sheikh Abdul Aziz.

He said his conviction was based on historical factors as Islam made inroads
into Borneo through Sabah.

"I learned that the Lahad Datu district accepted Islam ahead of Melaka state
and Sabah could emerge as the centre of the Islamic missionary movement on the
island of Borneo," he said at the launch of the Jakim Sabah Retreat here Monday.

He said according to the Sabah population census in 2000, one per cent of
the people of Sabah or 26,598 have no religion.
