Kuwait takes delivery of world''s 2nd largest fire-fighting ship

By Miyoko Ishigami South Korea (KUNA) - A ranking delegation of the Kuwaiti firefighting department officially took delivery on Monday of the world's second largest fire-fighting vessel on record.
The huge 39-meter-long ship is the second largest naval vessel used by firefighters in the whole world, said the Kuwaiti ambassador to South Korea Muteb Al-Mutoteh, in a statement to KUNA after he attended the ceremonial delivery of the ship to the Kuwaiti delegation, headed by Director-General of the Kuwait Fire Service Directorate (KFSC) Major General Jassim Ali Al-Mansouri The high-tech ship, "Al-Mujaweb," is being supplied to the national fire-fighting squads to enhance their capacities to put out blazes at sea, in shadow of the increasing number of vessels cruising offshore, he added.
The ship will set sail to Kuwait, on Tuesday, with a schedule to cross 6, 600 nautical miles. With specialists and Kuwaiti crew members aboard the vessel, it is expected to anchor at Kuwait Shuwaikh port in late March.
Maj. Gen. Al-Mansouri told KUNA that the ship had been built at a cost of five million Kuwaiti dinars.
The 13-m-wide ship is designed to extinguish blazes, carry out rescue missions, put out fires aboard tankers and offshore platforms. It is also equipped with night vision thermal cameras, engines, pumps for water and foam and electronic fire control devices. Its speed reaches 13 knots per hour.
