SHAHRIZAT CALLS FOR MORE CHANCES FOR WOMEN IN FINANCE
KUALA LUMPUR, March 8 (Bernama) -- Minister of Women, Family and Community Development Shahrizat Abdul Jalil has called for more opportunities for women to rise in the financial sector.
She said Tuesday that the participation of women in the sector was still limited because the management of most financial institutions in the country seemed not to notice their talent and ability.
"There is already a lot of potential and talent among the public sectors. We need to hone their talent for the corporate sector," she told reporters after launching celebrations here of International Women’s Day with the theme "Equal Access to Education, Training and Science and Technology: Pathway to Decent Work for Women".
Shahrizat received 200 computers from Maybank Chairman Megat Zaharuddin Megat Mohd Nor to be distributed to 13 Rumah Nur orphanages nation-wide.
Shahrizat urged financial institutions to review their set-up to ensure, among other things, that women are represented in their board of directors.
"This revision is important for us to know the number of women there are in the highest echelons of the financial and other sectors," she said.
Shahrizat said that Malayan Banking Berhad, or Maybank, as the biggest bank in the country led financial institutions in appointing women to high posts, including the position of board director.
She was confident that Maybank could lead other financial institutions to follow its example.
