M'SIANS MUST HAVE FIGHTING SPIRIT IN DEFENDING NATION

KUALA LUMPUR, March 8 (Bernama) -- Malaysians must have fighting spirit and strong character to ensure that they are able to stand up and defend the country against its enemies, said Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
The former prime minister said Malaysians must also be prepared to fight for a cause, for oneself and for their familes, and should not be defeated easily.
It was his principle in life that whatever happens, "we must fight, win and able to stand up again, he told reporters after launching his memoir "A Doctor in the House: The Memoirs of Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad", here Tuesday.
Dr Mahathir said based on his 22-year experience as Malaysia's prime minister, he faced many challenges, not only from inside but also outside of Malaysia.
There were politicians against him, international leaders and international actions against the country, he said and added: "We could have fallen and suffered terribly but we were determined that whatever happened, we must fight, win and be able to stand up again."
When asked whether it was the same principle he used during the Asian financial crisis in the 1990s, Mahathir said it was difficult since everybody adviced him to follow and submit to the International Monetary Fund (IMF), but he stood by his principles.
Touching on his 800-page memoir, which he start penning eight years ago after stepping down as Malaysia's fourth Prime Minister, Dr Mahthir said it was about his life for the past 80 years.
"There things than can serve as a guide and others to be avoided.
"I have taken eight years to write this book, I want people to read the book and hope people will read it."
Asked whether he was prepared to face the possibility of lawsuits over the contents, he said:" When I was writing it, I tried to avoid hurting others but nevertheless I had to write what was true,"
"I can understand there will be people who will take xception...I accept that...if you want to sue, go ahead and sue," he said, adding that he could not help it if he made enemies because of what he had written and it was up to the readers to evaluate the book for themselves.
"I had tried my best although I cannot be a judge of my own work, it is up to the people of today and the future to pass judgment regarding the book," he said.
The book which touched on personal matters such as on his parents and growing-up years, his university years and his courtship of Dr Siti Hasmah Mohd Ali, also covers a wide range of topics including Ops Lalang, the Judiciary and his relationship with his former deputy Anwar Ibrahim.
