Australia helps protect Vientiane from floods

(KPL) The Australian Government has provided US$150,000 for the Government of the Lao PDR on Monday to help protect Vientiane from flooding.

The funds are used for the sandbagging activities along the bank of theMekong in Vientiane Capital.

This quick response to the floods from Australia recognises the seriousness of the flood and the severe impact it may have. The Australian Ambassador Dr Michele Forster met with Mr. Sommad Pholsena, Minister for Public Works and Transport to confirm Australia's support. Dr Forster commended theGovernment and people of Laos for their swift response.

The sandbagging activities help protect important infrastructure andminimise property damage in Vientiane City.

Dr Forster said that "The Australian funding will enable the Government to protect vital infrastructure in Vientiane at this critical stage of theflood so that the government can continue their important operations".

The Australian funding will be channelled immediately through a World Bankmanaged trust fund for road maintenance.

Australia will continue to work closely with the National Disaster Management Office and development partners to assess the impact of the flood, particularly in rural and remote areas where the damage could be significant. This will enable donors to respond to the medium- andlonger-term needs once the flood water subsides.
