Baraka telecom to invest RM50 mil to set up MVNE HUB in KL
KUALA LUMPUR, March 10 (Bernama) -- Baraka Telecom, a unit of Reach Telecom Holding KSCC of Kuwait, will invest RM50 million (US$16.66 million) into setting up a Mobile Virtual Network Enabler (MVNE) hub in Kuala Lumpur.
Baraka Telecom is launching the MNVE on March 17 to offer services to mobile virtual network operators (MVNOs) across Asia, the company said in statement Thursday.
It was reported recently, that Maxis in on the final leg of negotiations with Baraka, on a three-year MVNO.
OSK Research on Monday said it sees the impact from the potential tie-up as being negligible for Maxis, given the niche focus of Baraka, whose target markets are Islamic mobile and data services.
"Baraka plans to provide shariah-compliant telecommunications services in Malaysia," said the research house.
OSK said the parties behind Baraka want to consider more options, including a revisit of its business model, in light of the extremely competitive mobile landscape in Malaysia and the challenges faced by MVNOs.
The decision to go along with Maxis is likely to have been encouraged by the close ties between the shareholders of Baraka and Saudi Telecom, a major shareholder of Maxis, OSK said.
Maxis' share was traded flat at RM5.51 (US$1.83) at 12.30pm.
