Entrepreneurship development growing in importance

KUALA LUMPUR, March 10 (Bernama) -- The development of entrepreneurship as
both concept and activity has been growing in importance in Malaysia, said
Minister of International Trade and Industry, Mustapa Mohamed.

He said the perceived importance of entrepreneurship to the growth of the
country's economy was evidenced by the sheer amount and variety of supporting
mechanisms and policies that existed for entrepreneurs, including funding,
physical infrastructure and business advisory services.

"The government will pay greater attention to improving entrepreneurial
capabilities, reducing fear of failure thereby enhancing entrepreneurial
intentions," he said at the launch of the book, Entrepreneurship in Malaysia:
Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) Report 2009, here Thursday.

Mustapa said his ministry has several collaboration programmes with
institutes of higher learning to inculcate and instill entrepreneurial culture
and values in all public and private universities in the country.

"The book is the culmination of efforts by both GEM and the University
Tun Abdul Razak," he said.

The university would publish the GEM 2010 Malaysia Report soon.

According to the book, Malaysia has a higher proportion of
opportunity-driven entrepreneurship in the early-stage entrepreneurial activity
compared to other efficiency-driven economies.

In the report, Malaysia's early-stage entrepreneurial activity measures 4.4
per cent, which represents a combination of nascent entrepreneurs at 1.7 per
cent and new business owner-managers at 2.7 per cent.

GEM is the world's leading research project dedicated to understanding the
relationship between entrepreneurship and national economic development.

Meanwhile, UNIRAZAK and the Global Entrepreneurship Research Association
(GERA) also exchanged sponsorship documents, signifying their partnership and
thereby helping to fulfil UNIRAZAK's quest to actively contribute to the
development efforts of the nation.

UNIRAZAK president and vice chancellor, Prof Md Zabid Abdul Rashid,
said the sponsorship of GERA represented an opportunity for the university to
differentiate itself as a leader in global entrepreneurship research and to
strengthen its position as a forerunner in regional entrepreneurship as a member
of the GEM.
