MERCY MALAYSIA TO HELP OUT IN TSUNAMI-HIT JAPAN
KUALA LUMPUR, March 12 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Medical Relief Society (MERCY Malaysia) has alerted its Rapid Assessment Team, the Emergency Response Unit and volunteers to be on standby should there be any deployment to Japan to help in the wake of a massive earthquake and a tsunami there Friday.
MERCY Malaysia President Dr Ahmad Faizal Mohd Perdaus said Saturday that should there be a deployment, the MERCY Malaysia Rapid Assessment Team would conduct an on-the-ground assessment to determine the humanitarian needs within the affected region.
"We are working closely with the Embassy of Japan here in Kuala Lumpur, and have been in touch with the Embassy of Malaysia in Tokyo," Ahmad Faizal said in a statement.
He expressed MERCY Malaysia's deep regret over the loss of lives resulting from the earthquake and tsunami and extended its sympathy to the affected families.
An 8.9-magnitude earthquake struck Japan yesterday afternoon and triggered a 10-metre high tsunami which lashed onto the northeastern part of the country, resulting in up to 1,000 people killed in the twin disasters.
