Singapore's sniffer dogs to Japan's rescue
SINGAPORE, March 12 (Bernama) -- Singapore will send sniffer dogs to
facilitate search and rescue (SAR) operations in the aftermath of the massive
8.9 magnitude earthquake which hit northeast Japan, killing hundreds and causing
widespread devastation.
In a statement Saturday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said a team of five
canines would be despatched, following a request from the Japanese Government.
On another development, Singapore leaders sent condolences to the
Japanese leaders over the earthquake and tsunami which occured on Friday.
In his condolence message to Japan's Emperor Akihito, President S. R. Nathan
said he was saddened to learn of the earthquake which struck the Tohoku region,
resulting in the loss of life and destruction to property.
Conveying the city-state's deepest sympathies, Nathan said Singapore's
thoughts were with the Emperor and the people of Japan during this difficult
time.
The president said he had no doubts Japan would overcome this setback with
courage and dignity.
Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong also extended his sympathies,
saying he was deeply saddened by the loss of life and destruction caused by the
earthquake and tsunami in eastern Japan.
In his letter to Prime Minister Naoto Kan, he said the Japanese Government
and people acted rapidly and resolutely to deal with the disaster.
He is confident that under Kan's able leadership, Japan would recover from
the disaster.
"Singapore stands ready to assist in any way it can," he added.
