BIMP-EAGA COULD BECOME GATEWAY FOR NORTHERN EAST ASIA MARKET - RAMOS
KOTA KINABALU (Malaysia), March 14 (Bernama) -- The Brunei
Darussalam-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines East Asean Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA), with a combined population of over 50 million, has the potential to become the gateway for northern east Asia market.
Former Philippines president Fidel V. Ramos, who is also chief architect of BIMP-EAGA, said this would be achievable if the BIMP-EAGA economic and cultural community could position itself as the model for a Central East Asia Growth Polygon.
In this way, he said BIMP-EAGA would combine the separate but adjacent territories or countries of Hong Kong, Macau, Hainan, Guangdong, Fujian, Taiwan,Okinawa and Guam (US) into a synergistic powerhouse that would provide benefits for all East Asia because of the existence of Asean plus China, plus Japan and plus South Korea agreements.
"The challenge for us is to use these potentials to the maximum for the benefit of those who live, work and love in this historic and bountiful region of Asean," he told reporters after the opening ceremony of the BIMP-EAGA Expo 2011 at the Sabah Trade Centre here Sunday.
On the level of progress or development of BIMP-EAGA since its inception 17 years ago, Ramos said the grouping had proven to be successful.
"For example, BIMP-EAGA has forged an agreement with Australia's Northern Territory to facilitate the opening of more investments and trade exchanges between the two emerging economic hubs.
"A lot of people (business community) have also showed interest in attending BIMP-EAGA's related activities or expo as observer, and this is a good sign for BIMP-EAGA's future," he said.
Ramos hoped the close cooperation of member nations would pave the way for improved air and sea linkages within the BIMP-EAGA.
