BIMP-EAGA POISED TO BECOME MAJOR CONTRIBUTOR TO ASEAN ECONOMIC COMMUNITY

KOTA KINABALU (Malaysia), March 13 (Bernama) -- The Brunei
Darussalam-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines East ASEAN Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA) is poised to become a major contributor to the realisation of an Asean economic community soon.
Towards this end, Chief Minister Musa Aman said, member nations of
BIMP-EAGA should have better connectivity to facilitate the freer movement of goods and people.
"We must encourage the growth of entrepreneurs who are able to take advantage of the opportunities that will emerge from a stronger cooperation in BIMP-EAGA," he said in his speech at the opening of the BIMP-EAGA Expo 2010 at Sabah Trade Centre here Sunday.
Musa's speech was read out by state industrial development minister Raymond Tan Shu Kiah. Also present was former Philippine president Fidel V. Ramos.
The chief minister called on the grouping to take stock of individual strengths and shared resources and collectively engage markets, in the region and globally, to reap maximum benefits.
On the weak economic complementaries, Musa said the sub-region produced and exported similiar commodities "but we should view this in a positive way to strengthen our agriculture, fisheries and manufacturing sectors, allowing EAGA to have greater significant in Asean".
"The food basket vision of BIMP-EAGA is timely, given that food security is a pressing agenda worldwide. The Food and Agriculure Organisation estimates that the world's food production must increase by 70 per cent in 2015 to meet the estimated population growth," he said.
He said another source of wealth for the BIM-EAGA was through tourism.
"We are blessed with a diverse range of natural atractions and good environment. EAGA is home to one of the world's largest and oldest rainforests."
On the role of the private sector, Musa said, through the leadership of the BIMP-EAGA Business Council, it should strengthen its capacity to collectively promote trade, investment and tourism in the region.
