Troops loyal to Gaddafi Monday used its air force to
pound Ajdabiya after sweeping east, rebels were quoted as
saying by the BBC.
A series of air offensives against the outgunned and
loosely organized rebels by the Gaddafi regime has led to
mounting calls for an internationally-imposed no fly zone over
the country.
G8 nations gathered in Paris Monday to thrash out a
common line.
Clinton is expected to meet rebel representative in
Paris, Mahmoud Jibril, the head of foreign affairs in the
National Council, which is based in Benghazi.
According to UN estimates, over 1,000 people have been
killed since the uprising against Gaddafi's 41 years rule
began on February 14. More than 200,000 people have fled the
country, most of them foreign workers.
The looming humanitarian crisis and atrocities by
Gaddafi's troops may convince more powers to act swiftly on a
common international plan through the United Nations
Security Council.
Under pressure from the international community,
Libyan security forces have resorted to "arbitrary arrests and
forced disappearances".
Human Rights Watch said the Gaddafi regime had carried
out a wave of "arbitrary arrests and forced disappearances" in
the capital Tripoli, the BBC reported.
The rights watchdog said Libyan authorities have
arrested scores of protesters and suspected government
critics, adding that some of them had been tortured.
