MALAYSIAN KING LAUNCHES BOOK ON COUNTRY'S KINGS SINCE 1957
KUALA LUMPUR, March 15 (Bernama) -- Malaysian King Tuanku Mizan Zainal
Abidin Monday launched the coffee table book titled, "Tiang Seri Negara: Seri Paduka Baginda Yang di-Pertuan Agong Semenjak 1957", at the Royal Lake Club, here.
Also present were the Tunku Laxamana of Negeri Sembilan Tunku Naquiyuddin Ibni Almarhum Tuanku Ja'afar and several other members of royalty.
Among the VIP guests were Higher Education Deputy Minister Saifuddin Abdullah who represented Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak, the book's advisory panel member Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah and former ITM (now UiTM) director Dr Arshad Ayub.
The book, written by Arus Intelek Sdn Bhd executive chairman Azizah Mokhzani, features the history of the institution of Malay rulers, and the role and powers of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong as the head of state.
It also tells about the personality and life of each ruler or sultan who became the King.
Najib in his speech, the text of which was read out by Saifuddin, said the book could open the eyes of the world community that Malaysia had contributed to an excellent and unique democratic system and practice, where the King was appointed based on a selection and rotation process and not merely because of one's royal ancestry.
"The system of administration in this country is therefore very democratic," he said.
The prime minister also said the book should be acquired by every public and private agency and corporate body so that it could be accessed by their respective employees.
"This way, we can further raise the standing and strengthen the royal institution which is our national identity, besides strengthening our constitutional monarchy system in the eyes of the world."
Meanwhile, Azizah said she was inspired to write the book when the 12th King Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin ibni Almarhum Tuanku Syed Putra
Jamalullail came to visit her late husband Dr Mokhzani Abdul Rahim when he was warded at a hospital in Kuala Lumpur.
She said she was also inspired by what she had read about the past King.
"These writings made me appreciate more their role, which was also
influenced by their own personality and background.
"I thought that if I didn't compile the important information and stories about our kings into a book, we might not be able to share a part of our national heritage with future generations, while the country would lose an important intellectual property," she added.
The 352-page book which contains 620 photographs including historical ones, is published by Arus Intelek Sdn Bhd and priced at RM499.
