NEW OIL FIELD WITH MILLIONS IN RESERVES FOUND 100KM OFFSHORE FROM BRUNEI
MIRI (Malaysia), March 15 (Bernama) -- A new oil field estimated to contain several hundred million barrels in reserves has been found about 100 kilometres offshore from Brunei, The Brunei Times reported Tuesday.
The daily said the discovery was made by Brunei Shell Petroleum (BSP) who described it as a successful exploration and a significant oil and gas find in its deepwater acreage.
Quoting a BSP statement, it said the field known as Geronggong was in the third offshore acreage area and about one kilometre deep, the deepest water in which BSP had discovered hydrocarbons in the Brunei acreage.
"The depth is enough to fully submerge the world's tallest building, Dubai's Burj Khalifa, which is 828 metres tall," it added.
Drilling on the Geronggong well was carried out by a drill ship and the evaluation on the data obtained from the works is still being evaluated.
"But initial data estimates, the field could contain several hundred million barrels of oil in place, which makes it a very significant discovery for Brunei," BSP said.
