MALAYSIAN PARLIAMENT TO DEBATE THURSDAY MOTION ON JAPAN QUAKE, TSUNAMI

KUALA LUMPUR, March 15 (Bernama) -- The House of Representatives is expected to debate on Thursday an emergency motion on the earthquake and tsunami which devastated a part of northeastern Japan last Friday.
Deputy Speaker Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar said Tuesday the house of representatives had been informed by the government that a notice of the motion was expected to be given Wednesday.
Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Mohamed Nazri Abdul
Aziz was expected to table the motion for the debate by members of the house, he told reporters at his office, here.
Wan Junaidi said it was for this reason that he had rejected a request by M. Kulasegaran, a MP for Tuesday's sitting to be adjourned to discuss the earthquake and tsunami.
"I feel the motion is related to expressing our sympathy to the government and people of Japan over the disaster that has befallen them," he said.
Wan Junaidi said the essence of the debate on the motion would be conveyed to the leadership in Japan as well as the Japanese mission in Malaysia.
An 8.9-magnitude earthquake struck offshore Japan on Friday, unleashing a 10-metre high tsunami which lashed the northeastern part of the country, resulting in up to 10,000 people killed in the twin disasters.
