The groups include US-led Task Force 151, European
Union Naval Force Somalia (EUNAVFOR) and the NATO.
On the measures suggested for the merchant ships, the
sources said the Indian ships which pass through these areas
have been asked to enhance vigilance, put physical barriers
such as barbed wires on ship periphery and to have a 'safe
house' under the international Best Maganagement Practices.
The concept of 'safe house' for vessels is based on
the fact that seizure of crew members is one of the main means
of pirates gaining control over the ship.
"Therefore the ships must have a safe house with thick
walls, electronic doors and an email connection so that the
crew can call for help and remain safe till the time forces
interdict the ship," they added.
On the increasing incidents of piracy, they said
pirates have carried out 87 attacks worldwide in the last two
