One Month Meleka River Festival From June 1
MELAKA (Bernama) - The month-long Melaka River Festival from June 1 will have 52 interesting events to make the festival an exciting affair.
Chief Minister Mohd Ali Rustam said the fifth edition of the festival hoped to attract 500,000 local and foreign tourists and RM250 million in revenue if each tourist spent RM500. (US$1=RM3.04)
Speaking at the Pesta Sungai Melaka (Melaka River Fiesta) 2011 promotion hi-tea here Thursday, he said the festival began in 2007 with the programme improved each year to maintain interest in the event.
He said statistics showed that 708,660 tourists visited Melaka in June 2009 and 1.04 million in 2010, and out of these figures, 87,000 visited the Melaka River Festival in 2009 and 330,000 in 2010.
Among the activities will be the decorated boat, fishing and photography competitions, Melaka River Run, cultural performances, forum and fashion show.
The festival, which is also aimed at promoting the state's tourism products such as the zoo, museum and Melaka Wonderland, is included in Tourism Malaysia's calendar of events.
