GIVE CONFIDENCE TO CHILDREN WITH DOWN SYNDROME

KUALA LUMPUR, March 18 (Bernama) -- "Teaching children with Down Syndrome to make them feel comfortable in their environment would help boost their confidence".
That was the advice given by physiotherapist Janice Ng.
(Down Syndrome is one of the commonest genetic disorder that affect children worldwide).
Ng said in the case of children with Down Syndrome, their learning, growing, thinking and reacting ability suffers a great deal and their general level of understanding gets hampered completely making them mentally dependable on the others.
"In this aspect, great care has to be taken right from the beginning (after birth and early years). It begins right at home", said Ng.

TEACH YOUR CHILD LITTLE THINGS

"As Down Syndrome happens to be a genetic disorder, due to which a child depends on the members of the family for a whole lot of time in life.
"But there are various new ways of looking at Down Syndrome where you could even sit and teach your child the little things of his interest so as to make life not so tough for him", she said.
According to Ng, teaching Down Syndrome children is a little tough but not impossible.
"That is why people say it is a tough challenge to deal with children who unfortunately were born with this genetic problem but when you know how to do it then it will be easier", she said.
Ng said a child suffering from Down Syndrome should be taken to a class full of children and made to interact with their classmates, just like normal children do.
"This really helps to boost their morale and make them mentally alert and awake", she said.

APPEARANCE

Ng said appearance is another aspect, which makes a Down Syndrome child to feel good or bad.
"It is human psychology that when a person thinks he or she doesn’t really look good, he or she doesn’t feel well too. On the contrary, when someone feels the opposite, that is, if someone feels he looks good, the confidence automatically shows.
"Hence work and focus on the physical aspect to make them feel better and normal just like the other normal children", she said.

ENVIRONMENT

Housewife Devika, who has a Down Syndrome daughter said children with this genetic disorder need special provisions in order to have a positive learning environment.
"It is possible for them to learn and be productive in school as they simply need to be in the correct environment and have access to the required materials.
"Children with Down Syndrome are capable of learning. Teachers must obtain the proper teaching aides and gather teaching tips in order to achieve positive results", said Devika whose daughter is in a special class at a primary school here.
Many schools have classes for students with disabilities who might
interfere with learning in a regular classroom. There are also special schools geared for people with disabilities. Children with Down Syndrome are capable of learning but not by the teaching methods used in traditional classrooms.

INCLUSION, RELATIONSHIP

Meanwhile, Ng said among the techniques that can be used to help Down Syndrome children in learning is the 'inclusion' and relationship' techniques.
"This simply means to make each student regardless of age or level of mental retardation, feel part of the group and comfortable with interacting with their other classmates. Encourage them to talk and interact positively with one another."
She said teaching Down Syndrome children to feel good about themselves allows them to have a better attitude and feel special.
"Every girl wants to look and feel pretty while every boy wants to be handsome and people with Down Syndrome are no different. They want to live relatively normal lives", she said.
Children with Down Syndrome generally suffer from an increased short attention span. They are easily distracted by the simplest things such as a light on the wall.
In order to engage their learning capabilities it is important to break lesson plans into different parts. They must be taught slowly and get frequent breaks in order to keep them focussed. Be open to flexibility and change.
Children with Down Syndrome often have trouble talking clearly. It is important to practice talking clearly and coherently. Make sure to have them talk clearly and make sure to talk clearly to them. Pay attention to the word or phrases they have trouble conveying and encourage them to try and speak correctly.
In 1974, a conference at the US National Institute of Health attempted to make a standard set of rules regarding the naming of diseases and conditions.
Since then the disorder is known as 'Down Syndrome' in North America instead of Down's Syndrome. Subsequently, Great Britain and other parts of Europe, began to adopt this name.
