Turkey has great potential in breeding different types of dogs, FCI President says
ISTANBUL (A.A) - 18.03.2011 - President of the Federation Cynologique Internationale (FCI), or "World Canine Organization", Hans Mueller said Thursday that there were dozens of types of dogs in Turkey.
Speaking to the AA after a signature ceremony in which the FCI signed a protocol with Turkey's Federation of Dog Breeds and Dog Science (KIF), making the KIF a "Partner Member" of the FCI, Mueller said that "Turkey had great potential in breeding different types of dogs".
With Turkey's participation, the FCI brought together a total of 86 countries. We have established a bridge between the east and the west with Turkey's joining the FCI, Mueller stressed.
Every member's relation with the FCI begins with partnership. At the end of four years, a country can end partnership or proceed to become a full member of the FCI, Mueller said.
We will hold an international competition in Turkey on May 22 to mark the 100th anniversary of the foundation of FCI. We will host a show of dogs as a festival. Such competitions and shows will continue in the future, Mueller said.
President of the Executive Board of KIF, Hasan Cansever, said that the KIF went through a tough road before joining the FCI as a partner.
We want the KIF to become a full member of the FCI in the future. We will organize dog breeding in Turkey as organized in other parts of the world, Cansever added.
FCI is an international federation of kennel clubs based in Thuin, Belgium. The English language translation, 'World Canine Organization', is not often used.
The aims of the FCI are to encourage and promote breeding and use of purebred dogs whose functional health and physical features meet the standard set for each respective breed and which are capable of
working and accomplishing functions in accordance with the specific characteristics of their breed; to protect the use, keeping and breeding of dogs in the member countries; to support free exchange of dogs and cynological information between member countries and initiate the organization of exhibitions and tests.
Among the most popular dogs in Turkey are 'Anadolu Coban Kopegi' (Anatolian Shepherd Dog) and 'Kangal' (Kangal Shepherd Dog).
