MALAYSIA TO TAKE PART IN CHOGM HOCKEY TOURNAMENTS
MELBOURNE, March 18 (Bernama) -- Malaysia will be among five nations to take part in the men and women's hockey tournaments in the lead-up to the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Perth in October.
The hockey tournaments, which will also feature Australia, India, Pakistan and New Zealand, will be held at the Perth Hockey Stadium from Oct 20 to 23.
Perth will also host two international netball matches.
Australian Defence Minister Stephen Smith joined Western Australia (WA) State Premier Colin Barnett at the Perth Hockey Stadium Friday to announce the sporting programme involving Commonwealth countries, the Australian Associated Press reported.
The Australian and WA governments will jointly fund the events.
The netball competition, featuring four of the top seven teams in the world, will begin on Oct 23 at the Burswood Dome where South Africa and Malawi play the curtain-raiser to an Australian Diamonds vs New Zealand Silver Ferns Test match.
Smith said the events would be "a tremendous thing for Perth" and as a former hockey player, he looked forward to the tournament.
Barnett said his state government recognised the importance of attracting major international events.
Hockey Australia chief executive officer Mark Anderson said the CHOGM 2011 hockey men and women's competitions, would be unlike any other hockey event.
Known as the International Super Series, the tournament would see Australia play host to some of the world's top teams in an innovative form of the game with each match comprising two 15-minute halves.
"For the first time ever, hockey will introduce several new and unique rules developed to make the game even faster and more exciting," Anderson said.
