Radiation Monitors Being Used At Malaysian Airports

PUTRAJAYA (Bernama) -- Radiation portal monitors are being used at
all international entry points in the country, Minister of Science, Technology
and Innovation Dr Maximus Ongkili said Friday.

Therefore, he said, Malaysians need not worry about contaminated food
entering the country pending enforcement of the ruling that all food products
from Japan must have a certificate of radioactivity on April 15.

The entry points are the Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Kota Kinabalu and Kuching
airports and the Klang and Tanjung Pelepas ports.

Ongkili said the requirement was taking some time to enable Japan to prepare
the mechanism to comply with the ruling.

"But if the mechanism can be settled quickly between the two countries, the
requirement can be enforced earlier," he told reporters here.

Ongkili was concerned about the rumours being spread about the possible
effect of radiation on Malaysians caused by the leak at a nuclear plant in Japan
following the earthquake and tsunami which had claimed thousands of lives.

He said that his ministry would not hesitate to act against the people
responsible if the rumours were found to threaten national security.

Ongkili said that only his ministry and agencies under it could issue any
statement on the Malaysian situation in relation to the disaster in Japan.
