MALAYSIA'S NCWO LAUNCHES RELIEF FUND TO HELP JAPAN'S EARTHQUAKE, TSUNAMI VICTIMS

PETALING JAYA (Selangor, Malaysia), March 19 (Bernama) -- The National
Council of Women Organisation (NCWO) Saturday launched the NCWO-Japan Earthquake and Tsunami Relief Fund to help victims of the twin disasters which struck the Land of the Rising Sun last week.
Its president, Dr Sharifah Hapsah Syed Hassan Shahabudin, said the
organisation would mobilise its affiliate members to raise money for the fund as much as they could.
"Whatever they (the Japanese) want to do with the money, they can...this is humanitarian...whatever that is required immediately for them because many of them have lost their homes, families...it's small but it's the thought that counts," she said at a press conference here.
Dr Sharifah Hapsah was happy to note that after only three days since the NCWO sent out letters of appeal to its members, they had collected RM27,860 (US$9,286).
"We hope NCWO members would continue to raise the fund before the closing date on April 7," she said.
At the launch, up to 20 members and individuals handed over their
contributions to the fund.
The collection will be handed over to the Red Cresent Society which is coordinating relief and humanitarian work for Malaysia.
NCWO was established on Aug 25, 1963 to act as a consultative coordinating and advisory body to raise the status of women and their participation in national development.
It has 125 affiliates which act as independent and viable organisations to pursue their own programmes and lend strength and solidarity to NCWO.
