IATA REITERATES SUPPORT TO MAINTAIN SAFE AND EFFICIENT AIRLINKS WITH JAPAN

SINGAPORE, March 19 (Bernama) -- The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has reiterated its support and efforts to maintain safe and efficient air links with Japan in the aftermath of last week’s earthquake and tsunami.
In a statement Saturday, IATA director general and chief executive officer Giovanni Bisignani said the thoughts and prayers of the air transport industry were with the Japanese people at this most difficult time.
In times of crisis, he said, air transport takes on a critical role.
"Our members are rising to the challenge of bringing relief supplies, equipment and people to Japan as well as connecting families affected by this tragedy," he said.
IATA said it had mobilised its resources to support the aviation industry in several critical areas including settlement operations. "Our Tokyo office remains open and the settlement system is functioning normally," it said.
On fuel, it said that some key fuel infrastructure facilities in Japan were damaged and most Japanese airports had fuel supplies for the next 10 days.
"IATA is coordinating actions among airlines to maximise existing fuel supplies, including voluntary tankering of jet fuel," it said adding that airlines had been briefed on industry agreed rationing regimes should supply shortages arise.
