MALAYSIA IMPOSES STRINGENT CHECKS ON VEGETABLES, FRUITS FROM JAPAN
PETALING JAYA (Selangor, Malaysia), March 19 (Bernama) -- Stringent checks are in place on fruits and vegetables imported from Japan, said Agriculture and Agro-based Industry Minister Noh Omar.
He said the step was necessary to block food products contaminated with radiation from entering the country and that his ministry was working closely with the Health Ministry on this.
"The move is also extended to canned food imported from Japan," he told reporters after opening an agriculture carnival at here Saturday.
However, he said Malaysia did not import mutton or beef from Japan as there were no halal certified abbatoirs there.
The move to vet food imports from Japan comes in the wake of explosions that occurrred at the Fukushima nuclear power plant in the aftermath of the earthquake-tsunami disaster that hit the northeastern part of Honshu island.
