Indian American recommended as US varsity president

Lalit K Jha
Washington, Mar 19 (PTI) Indian American academician
Satish K Tripathi, an internationally accomplished computer
scientist, has been recommended as the next president of the
prestigious University at Buffalo in New York.
The State University of New York (SUNY) Chancellor
Nancy L Zimpher has asked SUNY Board of Trustees to convene a
special meeting in April in Buffalo to formally consider his
appointment as its president, a university release said.
If confirmed, Tripathi will be the first
international-born president in UB's history.
He would be the 15th president of UB, the largest and
most comprehensive university in the SUNY system and one of
two SUNY institutions to be a member of the prestigious
Association of American Universities (AAU).
"Tripathi's international reputation as an
accomplished researcher and transformative leader in higher
education makes him ideally suited to serve as the president
of the University at Buffalo," said Zimpher.
Tripathi said, "I am honoured to be recommended by
SUNY Chancellor Nancy Zimpher to be the University at
Buffalo's next president. It would be my distinct privilege to
lead our remarkable university, which is recognised for its
tradition of excellence and has an extraordinary future
ahead."
An internationally recognised computer scientist,
Tripathi, 60, joined UB as provost - the university's chief
academic officer - on July 1, 2004, after serving as dean of
the Bourns College of Engineering at the University of
California, Riverside.
Tripathi graduated from Banaras Hindu University in
India in 1968. In addition to a doctorate in computer science
from the University of Toronto in 1979, he holds three
master's degrees -- one in computer science from the
University of Toronto (1976) and two in statistics from the
University of Alberta (1974) and Banaras Hindu University
(1970).
