Turkey's chief EU negotiator attends ceremony at Turkish embassy in U.S. capital

WASHINGTON D.C. (A.A) - 19.03.2011 - Turkey's chief negotiator for talks with the European Union (EU) attended Friday a ceremony held at the Turkish embassy in the U.S. capital of Washington D.C. on the occasion of Canakkale Naval Victory and Martyrs Day.
Speaking at the ceremony, Turkish State Minister & Chief EU Negotiator Egemen Bagis said the culture of tolerance coming from Turkey's history was a major qualification that distinguished the country from others.
Pointing to the diplomats who lost their lives while representing Turkey abroad, Bagis said the only mistake such people had made was to love their country.
Expressing the importance of three major Turkish associations' participation in the ceremony held in the U.S. capital, Bagis said, "With such an understanding and determination, we will get over all the obstacles in front of us".
Bagis also noted that Turkey would not only become one of the top 10 economies of the world by the year 2023, but it would also continue to be a modern country at EU standards that inspired the whole world.
Delivering a speech, U.S. ambassador in Washington D.C. Namik Tan said that the main duty of diplomats was to ensure the continuity of peace.
"The memory of our martyrs, who sacrificed their lives to give our citizens a peaceful life, is still alive in our hearts and minds. On this occasion, I would like to commemorate with gratitude our martyrs who lost their lives while performing their duties both in and out of the country," Tan said.
