Turkish premier says Turkey cannot remain indifferent while Libya sheds tears

JEDDAH (A.A) - 20.03.2011 - Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that Turkey could not remain indifferent while Libya shed tears.
Speaking at the Jeddah Economic Forum in Saudi Arabia, Prime Minister Erdogan said, "when we came to the political power, we were aware that a country having problems with its neighboring countries could not develop its economy. For instance, the long-standing instability in Iraq also affected Turkey, overshadowing our foreign trade, investments and tourism. The terrorist organization sheltering in northern part of Iraq targeted tranquillity and domestic peace in Turkey. Therefore, we attach great importance to stability and peace in our region."
"Now, we cannot remain indifferent while Libya sheds tears. We cannot remain silent while innocent civilians, children, elderly and women are killed in Palestine. I want to reiterate once again that we have a great respect for territorial integrity and independence of each country in the region. We have never intervened in domestic affairs of any countries. We do not have any secret intention about any countries. Turkey's axis is clear. We are trying to contribute to regional peace," he said.
He rejected the allegations of Neo-Ottomanism, saying, "such an accusation is totally unacceptable. This allegation was put forward to prevent Turkey's efforts to ensure peace in its region."
"In this region, especially Israel should realize a fact. Bloodshed and tears not only harm Palestine and the regional countries, but it also damage Israel itself. Instability in the region affects all regional countries including Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Egypt, Syria, Turkey and Israel. Actually, Israeli government does not torment only Palestinians with its violent policies. It is Israeli people who have suffered at the same time. We expect Israeli government to put an end to its violent policies toward Palestinians and its own people. We call on Israeli government once again that it should question its policies and listen to voices of the regional countries and its own people. Turkey is determined to reiterate its calls for dialogue in the region," he said.
Prime Minister Erdogan highlighted importance of solidarity and cooperation among the regional countries to find solutions to the problems.
