HOMEOPATYHY TREATMENT, INDIA’S BOOMING TRADE

By P.Vijian
NEW DELHI, March 21 (Bernama) -- The Indian homeopathy treatment market is forecast to hit RM2.7 billion (US$1=RM3.03) this year, spurred by 30 percent annual growth rate, only second to France, world's largest contributor.
Last year, the domestic homeopathy market size was valued at about RM1.5 billion.
A recent study by the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (Assocham), an apex trade body, showed that in 2009-10, about 120 million Indian patients used homeopathy to treat various aliments.

And, the figures are likely to surpass 160 million in the next two to three
years due to its growing popularity and acceptability among the masses.

"Over 75 percent of patients surveyed spoke very high for homeopathy,
arguing that though it takes longer to root out aliments but the treatment is
safe and physiologically satisfactory for there are no side effects," said D.S.
Rawat, Assocham's secretary-general.

The personalised treatment with greater private interactions between
homeopathy physicians and patients plus lower consultation fees was another
reason for more Indians switching from allopathy to the ancient system of
healthcare.

"Majority of them held that homeopathy users switch on to allopathy only on
exceptional cases and in acute emergencies, otherwise homeopaths are best
consulted for removal of majority physical and other aliments," added Rawat.

According to Assocham, many interviewed said homeopathy was increasingly
becoming an alternate to allopathic medicines.

Homeopathy effectively used in treating chronic ailments, including hair and
skin disorders, respiratory problems, arthritis and other miscellaneous
treatments like thyroid, bed-wetting, diabetes, and obesity.
