INDONESIA TO BID FOR 2019 ASIAN GAMES?
KUALA LUMPUR, March 21 (Bernama) -- Although Indonesia are still struggling
to host the 26th SEA Games this Nov, the island-republic is said to be eyeing to
host the 2019 Asian Games.
Indonesian National Sports Council (KONI) chairwoman Rita Subowo was quoted
by the Jakarta Post as saying that the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) supported
the Republic's intention to become the host for the second biggest sporting
event in the world.
"We have an opportunity to host the 2019 Asian Games without having to go
through a bidding process. If we can't do it, then, our second opportunity will
be in 2023, but that will have to be through a bidding process," Rita said.
She said this target could only be realized if the government supported
the bid to organize the event.
"This will depend on the government. First, there's the financial issue that
we have to discuss, then the preparations and the time frame, whether it will
clash with the elections or others," she added.
But Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) Honorary Secretary Sieh Kok Chi
has refuted Rita's claim that Indonesia would get an automatic ticket to host
the 2019 Asia Games.
"All Asian countries are keen to host the Games and must go through a
bidding process. Because there's always more than two countries interested to
become the host," he told Bernama, here Monday.
He said currently two countries, Vietnam and Dubai (UAE) were serious to bid
for the 2019 Asian Games although Hong Kong and India were also keen for the
host job.
The result of the 2019 Asian Games host job would only be known in 2012
while Incheon City in South Korea will host the 2014 edition.
Malaysia withdrew from the bid process for the 2019 games after the Cabinet
rejected an attempt last August due to the excessive cost involved.
Youth and Sports Minister Ahmad Shabery Cheek said his ministry
expect the cost of hosting the Games to reach RM1.6 billion or more.
He however did not deny the fact that his ministry was still interested to
bid for the 2023 edition.
