ISA IN BANGKOK EXTENDS UNTIL APRIL 24

JAMALUDDIN MUHAMMAD-BANGKOK, March 22 (Bernama) – The imposition of the Internal Security Act (ISA) in seven districts in this capital which was originally supposed to end this Friday has been extended until April 24.

Deputy Government spokesman Supachai Jaisamut said the Cabinet today agreed to extend the ISA for another 30 days in maintaining peace and public order.

The government took into consideration the Red Shirts and Yellow Shirts supporters' protests, here.

The Yellow Shirts have been encamped near the Prime Minister's Office since Jan 25 as they are not satisfied with the way Bangkok handled the Thai-Cambodian border dispute.

The fortnightly protests by the Red Shirts revolve around seeking the release of their detained leaders and supporters.

The seven districts are Dusit, Phra Nakhon, Watthana, Ratchathewi, Wang Thong Lang, Pathumwan and Porn Prap Satru Phai.

The ISA, among others, prohibits illegal gathering and allows the deployment of troops in helping to maintain peace and order.
