NORTH KOREA LOOKS FORWARD TO BERNAMA'S BIGGER ROLE IN ASIA
KUALA LUMPUR, March 22 (Bernama) -- North Korea hopes that Malaysia
through its national news agency, Bernama, will play a bigger role in the dissemination of news in the Asian region.
Its Public Information Committee vice-chairman, Jong Yong Chol, said Bernama had an important role in managing domestic and international news for the benefit of the people of Malaysia and other countries.
"We will work at strengthening cooperation between Bernama and KCNA (Korean Central News Agency) in the exchange of news and information," he said after his visit to Bernama, here, Tuesday.
The Korean embassy's Second Secretary Paek Nam Chol interpreted what had Jong said in Korean into Malay.
During the visit, Jong's delegation was briefed on Bernama and its services by the news agency's general manager Hasnul Hassan and then taken on a tour of the agency's Editorial Department and Photo Unit, as well as Radio24, Bernama TV and NAM News Network.
Also present during their visit was Bernama editor-in-chief Yong Soo Heong, and deputy editors-in-chief Zulkefli Salleh (General News Service), Zakaria Abd Wahab (Economic News Service) and Ahmad Zukiman Mohd Zain(International/Foreign News Service).
The North Korean delegation is on a two-day visit to Malaysia to attend the joint preparatory meeting on cooperation in the information field between the two countries.
Describing Malaysia-North Korea diplomatic relations as good, Jong hoped the visit would further strengthen cooperation in the areas of information and politics between the two countries.
He said although not many Malaysians visited North Korea, the country still made efforts to promote Malaysia to its people through video screenings ofMalaysia's independence day celebration, festivals and other aspects of Malaysian life.
On the proposal for the exchange of videos and not just news and photos to increase understanding about things happening in both countries, Jong said his side would look into it.
At the meeting held in Angkasapuri (office of the Ministry of
Information)Monday, Malaysia and North Korea agreed to step up cooperation in areas related to information, including exchange of news and documentary films.
