Turkish parliament speaker says government's foreign policy placed on right axis
ISTANBUL (A.A) - 22.03.2011 - Turkish Parliament Speaker Mehmet Ali Sahin said Turkish government's foreign policy on Libya had been placed on the right axis.
At a press conference prior to his departure for New York, Sahin said the military action launched by western powers, especially France, contradicted the UN Security Council resolution on a no-fly zone made to stop attacks by Gaddafi forces.
On Monday, Turkey's foreign minister said European and U.S. forces did not fully respect procedures in international law to form a coalition to take action against Libya's leader Gaddafi.
"Firstly, there is a procedure in international law for such a coalition. We believe that these procedures have not been fully respected for Libya," Ahmet Davutoglu said.
Sahin said military action by the western coalition hit civilians and added: "If the goal is to protect innocent civilians of Libya, countries that led the UN Security Council resolution on this issue should pay utmost attention to this matter."
Sahin said NATO would hold an important meeting later in the day and Turkey was following developments very carefully.
"I think Turkey's objections on the issue are right," Sahin said.
