SINGAPORE TO BOOST GLOBAL COMPETITIVENESS IN PRECISION ENGINEERING SECTOR

SINGAPORE, March 23 (Bernama) -- Singapore has underlined four main pillars to further strengthen capabilities and boost its global competitiveness in the precision engineering (PE) sector.
Its Senior Minister of State for Trade & Industry and Education, S. Iswaran, said studies showed that the PE sector productivity level was only about half of that in US, Germany and Japan.
"There is room and potential for even more growth in the PE sector if we can strengthen our capabilities and further boost our global competitiveness," he said at the launch of MetalAsia 2011 here Wednesday.
Iswaran said to raise productivity, Singapore needed to move up the value chain by broadening and deepening the industry’s scope.
He said manufacturing remained a pillar of Singapore’s economy, accounting for 22 per cent of the gross domestic product in 2010.
