Japan constructs 2 bridges in Xieng Khouang Province
VIENTIANE ,MARCH (KPL) Embassy of Japan handed-over 2 cable bridges to villagers of Phonethanh village and Phosy village in Kham District of Xieng Khouang Province.
Hand-over ceremony of 2 bridges was held at Phosy village, Kham District, Xieng Khouang Province on 18th March.
On that occasion, 2 bridges were handed over from Ms. Akiko TOMITA, Second Secretary of Embassy of Japan to Mr. Mixay PHENGSY, Vice Governer of Kham District, with the attendance of Mr. Bouasy PHANTHAVONG, Acting Director of Urban Development Administration Authority of Xieng Khouang Province, Mr. Khammone, Chief of Phonthan village, Mr. Bounsy, Chief of Phosy village and villagers from Kham District.
Within this project, Japan provided 81,156 USD. In addition, villagers provided some construction material (woods, sand, gravel etc.) and participated into some construction work. According to Embassy of Japan, this project can be said that the good example of collaboration between Embassy and Villagers. Embassy would appreciate this kind of villagers’ self-help.
Both Phonethanh village and Phosy village are located along the Nam Mat River. Before acquiring these 2 cable bridges, there was only a simple bamboo bridge. Especially in the rainy season, it was very difficult for villagers to across the river due to the unstability of the bamboo bridge.
Ms. TOMITA said that it was a great pleasure for Embassy of Japan if these 2 bridges brings comfortable living environment to villagers and, at the same time, enable villagers to access to market to sell their products.
Now, Japan is facing an unprecedented difficulty caused by the devastating earthquakes and tsunami, however, according to Embassy of Japan, planned development assistance to the Lao PDR by the Government of Japan will be provided as agreed.
At the end of this month, Embassy of Japan will hold a signing ceremony on 11 development projects, including as funding support for UXO Lao and construction of many facilities (water supply systems in 10 villages, health centres in 2 villages, rural roads in 1 area, bridges in 1 area, irrigation facility in 1 area and a dormitory for students of irrigation school). The total funding for these 11 projects will be 1,449,975 USD.
