NO OVER-EXPOSURE OF RADIOACTIVE IN 46 FLIGHTS FROM JAPAN

KUALA LUMPUR, March 25 (Bernama) -- The monitoring of 46 flights from Japan
to Malaysia and its passengers plus crew, showed no exposure to radioactive
particles above the normal level.

Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Dr Maximus Ongkilisaid screening
of passengers arriving from Japan at the main international airports was a
precautionary measure taken to raise public confidence following the nuclear
leakage in Japan.

He said in a statement Friday a second screening or individual monitoring
would only be carried out if the readings were above the level allowed - 0.5
microsievert per hour.

Ongkili said based on the latest information received from the International
Civil Aviation Organisation and International Air Transport Association, the
recent nuclear accident in Fukushima, Japan has had no adverse health impact on
people in Malaysia at the moment.

He said the government, however, was still monitoring the situation
following the incident in Japan through agencies like the Atomic Energy
Licensing Board (EALB), Malaysia Nuclear Agency and the Meteorology Department.

Meanwhile, the radiation portal monitors installed at the Kuala Lumpur
International Airport since 2009 showed normal level of radioactivity.

Ongkili said so far, 28 individuals had come to the AELB and the Malaysian
Nuclear Agency to seek nuclear pollution monitoring service.

Based on news reports on March 24 and 25, countries like Singapore, United
States, Australia, Canada and Russia have banned food imports from prefectures
affected by the radioactive exposure and Malaysia would also continue monitoring
the situation.

"As a precautionary measure, the Health Ministry has imposed the Level Five
inspection of hold, test and inspected by the Food Safety Information System of
Malaysia (FoSIM) at entry points before releasing food products such as fruits,
vegetables, fish and meat products imported from Japan," he said.

Ongkili said 27 samples of food products had been tested and all products
had complied to the permissible level of radioactive.
