2012 TO BE TIPPING POINT FOR ISKANDAR MALAYSIA
By Choong Eng Han
JOHOR BHARU (Malaysia), March 28 (Bernama) -- The first phase of catalyst projects in the ambitious Iskandar Malaysia will begin operations next year, signalling the beginning of a strong and sustainable metropolis of international standing.
"It will be a tipping point when the first wave of catalytic projects begin operations and whether Iskandar Malaysia will tip upwards or downwards will be known eight months from now," said Iskandar Regional Development Authority (IRDA) Chief Executive Ismail Ibrahim.
"The first phase of development will focus on developments surrounding the 70 odd kilometers of the waterfront area, which will comprise tourism, healthcare and education projects.
"We have a goal and a target, and we cannot compromise on anything less," he told reporters at a media briefing here Saturday.
Ismail said all parties must foster greater effort and coordination to ensure the success of Iskandar Malaysia.
"IRDA cannot be contented by just bringing in investments but also see how these investments can spillover into wealth distribution for the community within Iskandar Malaysia," he said.
In the next five years, the authority is targeting investments of
RM73.3 billion (SU$1=RM3.03) to create the eight per cent economic growth targeted for Iskandar Malaysia.
Ismail added that efforts would be doubled to bring in average investments of RM13 billion, annually, to Iskandar Malaysia.
As of Dec 2010, the authority recorded cumulative investments totalling RM69.43 billion which exceeded the initial forecast of RM47 billion.
The manufacturing sector accounted for the bulk of investments at RM23.6 billion, property developments at RM16.5 billion and tourism at RM1.2 billion.
"We expect investments from the tourism sector to increase exponentially when the first phase of development commences," he said.
On planned investments to date, Ismail said RM28.54 billion has been realised.
The development of industries in Iskandar Malaysia has been planned with five flagships zones, covering an area of 221,700 hectares, three times the size of Singapore.
