Turkish banks to contribute improving banking sector in Mideast

ISTANBUL (A.A) - 28.03.2011 - The head official of Turkey's Central Bank said on Monday that Turkish banks, which were willing to assess the business opportunities in the Middle East, could make a significant contribution to the banking systems of the countries of the region as well.
Turkish Central Bank Governor Durmus Yilmaz attended a conference titled "Enhancing Shamgen Banking: Turkey, Syria, Lebanon and Jordan" in Conrad Hotel in Istanbul.
Speaking at the conference, Yilmaz said European Union (EU) countries got the biggest share from Turkey's exports, adding that countries of the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) had been increasing their share in the recent term.
Yilmaz said EU-member states' share in Turkey's total exports had decreased from 56 to 46 percent between 2000 and 2010, while OIC members' share in the country's exports had increased from 13 to 29 percent in the same period.
Yilmaz noted that Turkey's "zero-problem" policy with its neighbors, its efforts to lift visas with those countries, as well as its active role as a mediator in an effort to improve ties between the countries of the region all paved the way for a regional cooperation that would yield to positive economic results for the region in near future.
"The conference we are hosting today, which may be considered a step that will improve the relations between the banking sectors of Turkey, Syria, Lebanon and Jordan in the short term, is expected to contribute to efforts aiming at establishing a common market in a wider geography covering the Persian Gulf, the Red Sea and the Mediterranean in the long term," he said.
Pointing to the regional cooperation agreement to be signed between the banks associations of Turkey, Lebanon and Jordan, and the Syrian central bank, Yilmaz said the deal aimed at building a bridge of cooperation between the banking systems of the four countries and improving communication channels.
"Turkish banks, which are eager to assess the business opportunities in the Middle East, will be able to make a significant contribution to the banking systems of the countries of the region during such process as well," the governor said.
Yilmaz also noted that participation banks conducting activities in interest-free banking sector in Turkey would also contribute to the cooperation between those countries.
