Dokdo claim: Korea should delink compassion from distortion

Japan reportedly plans to authorize the publication Wednesday of more middle-school textbooks stating that the Dokdo Islets are Japanese territory. This official fabrication of history could strain the relationship between the two countries. This could turn South Koreans??? recent sympathy and compassion into anger and hostility.
Japanese sociology and geology textbooks will contain the distorted reference that South Korea unlawfully claims sovereignty over Dokdo which is part of Japanese territory.
Japan should change its anachronistic attitude in view of the maturing of friendship between the two countries following the tsunami, earthquake and the nuclear disaster. South Koreans, even Japan???s sex slaves, have shown compassion and sympathy toward the quake-hit country with no strings attached. Japan should not return South Korea???s unwavering humanitarianism by the nationalistic distortion of history. Japan should not bow to the nationalistic voices of the ultra conservatives.
A prolonged dispute on Dokdo will not automatically make the islets its territory. In addition, Japan should not distort history in an attempt to whitewash students to drum up blind patriotism. Whatever interpretation Japan makes over the islets, Dokdo has been part of South Korean territory since the sixth century. This fact is backed by four objective criteria ??? by historical records, legitimacy, international law and effective control.
The two countries should engage in last-minute diplomatic dialogue so that Japan drops the claim. South Koreans should not fall prey to Japan???s publicity plot through its knee-jerk response. It is Tokyo???s heinous purpose to make the islets an internationally-disputed area as part of its long-term conspiracy to wage a battle in the international court. South Koreans are smart enough to delink their support for the Japanese victims to the Dokdo issue. Their humanitarian support for the disaster-hit victims should continue.
Consumers should refrain from boycotting Japanese products and stopping support for Japan???s recovery. However, Seoul should not compromise. The dual approach will put Koreans above Japanese in moral supremacy. Seoul should counter possible Japan???s anachronism with the action, including a renovation of a heliport and other facilities on the islets in a strong show of its effective control over the islets.
Diplomatic protests should be resolute, decisive and stern. An emotional reaction will be of no help to Korea. Local students should also be educated so that they can explain logically why Dokdo belongs to South Korea. Seoul should separate the textbook issue from the humanitarian one. South Korea should not be confused over the two issues.
It did not come to the aid of the misfortune-hit Japan out of expectation that the neighboring country would retract its claim over Dokdo. The world marveled at the coolness and calmness of the Japanese to the world???s fifth largest quake. Seoul expects Japan to demonstrate the same mature attitude toward Dokdo. Backstabbers should not be the nickname of the Japanese.
