MISSION MEMBERS ENCOUNTER COLD WEATHER IN SENDAI

From Mohd Faizal Hassan

SENDAI, March 30 (Bernama) -- The second group of volunteers from the Putera 1Malaysia Club involved in a humanitarian mission to Japan, arrived in Sendai to assist earthquake/tsunami victims.

Members of the mission will come face to face with the devastation caused by the earthquake and tsunami at Ichinomaki and Noburo here.

Both towns are under the Miyagi prefecture that suffered massive devastation and where thousands were killed.

Members of the mission who arrived in Sendai after a 14-hour drive by road from Tokyo will be stationed here for three days to assist victims of the earthquake and tsunami before distributing the 200 tonnes of supplies that include dry food, blankets, rubber boots and gloves and 1.5 million bottles of water.

Apart from the aftershock, members of the mission would also encounter chilly cold weather where temperatures can drop to minus 5 degrees Celsius.

Sendai, aside, three other prefectures that suffered massive damage were Fukushima, Ibaraki and Iwate.

A 9.0 magnitude earthquake rocked Japan on March 11, and the ensuing tsunami claimed 10,000 victims while another 16,000 were reported missing while the leakage of nuclear radiation from the Fukushima nuclear plant has raised alarm bells.
