M'SIAN JOURNALISTS, HUMANITARIAN MISSION MEMBERS VIRTUALLY SHAKEN BY 3 TREMORS WITHIN 30 MINUTES

From Mohd Faizal Hassan

MIYAGI, March 31 (Bernama) -- Nineteen Malaysian journalists and 30 volunteers in the Putera 1Malaysia Club were virtually shaken by three tremors that struck Sendai in Miyagi during a 30-minute spell.

During the 10.20pm incident, the journalists and volunteers on a
humanitarian mission to help victims of the earthquake and tsunami that devastated Japan on March 11, were in their hotel.

According to a journalist, every tremor lasted for a minute or so, sending panic among the members, since it was their first harrowing experience on the land of the rising sun.

However, when the situation returned to normal, everyone contacted each other to ensure each others safety.

The journalist added that some had decided to go down while some stayed put in the 14-storey hotel where the delegation was staying.

"May be such tremors are a common occurrence for the people of Japan but to us it was our first and we will never forget this experience," he said.

He added that subsequent inspections carried out also showed that there were no casualties or structural damages caused by the tremors.

According to residents here, it was a normal phenomenon there, since there had been about 500 such tremors after the 9.0 magnitude earthquake had struck on March 11.

The earthquake and the subsequent tsunami had killed 10,000 while another 20,000 have been reported missing.

Local residents who received handouts from the Humanitarian mission wished 'Arigato Gozaimas Malaysiano' (thank you Malaysia) to show their appreciation towards the efforts of the Putera 1Malaysia Club.

They received maggi mee, biscuits, chocolate and other essential items from
the humanitarian mission members.

Meanwhile, a visit by Bernama to the town of Sendai was a gloomy ride as it
was nothing but a trail of devastation left behind by the earthquake and
tsunami.

Though it has been two weeks after the tragedy, the site looked like it was
just struck by an earthquake and tsunami since thousands of cars, buses, lorries
and even ships remain piled up behind a backdrop of damaged houses, shops and
buildings.

According to some residents who were fortunate enough to survive the ordeal,
after the 9.0 magnitude earthquake, there was a tsunami warning siren but many
were not able to run to safety as giant waves started lashing and sweeping away
everything in its path.

The force of the waves even washed ashore 10 large ships that remain perched
on piles of rubbish that has yet to be cleared.

In Itchinomaki, a row of houses and buildings stretching for about 2kms was
razed by fire but the reason for the fire was not known yet.

Japanese army personnel were seen patrolling the areas to protect some of
the property that had withstood the tragedy.

Residents when met at relief centres claimed that about 10 tremors were felt
every day after the major earthquake on March 11.
