Turkish Airlines signs ordering agreement for 15 Boeing aircraft
ISTANBUL (A.A) - 01.04.2011 - Turkey's national flag carrier Turkish Airlines (THY) has signed an ordering agreement to buy 15 new generation Boeing 737 aircraft.
With the agreement, THY ordered 10 Boeing 737-800 and 5 737-900ER aircraft worth 1.2 billion USD, a statement from the airline company said on Friday.
THY purchased 20 aircraft from Boeing last year.
Commenting on the order, THY's Director General said that the Boeing 737s would help THY launch a truly global flight network.
Based in Istanbul, THY is one of the fastest growing and prosperous airlines in the world. It carries approximately 25 million passengers a year, with direct flights to 126 international and 37 domestic destinations.
The company was founded in 1933 with a fleet of five airplanes that carried a total of 28 passengers. THY made its first domestic flight in 1933 and the first international flight in 1947.
THY posted 286 million Turkish lira ($184.5 million) net profit in 2010.
