PM MEETS TAXI DRIVERS, GOES ON WALKABOUT

GEORGE TOWN (Penang, Malaysia), April 2 (Bernama) -- Prime Minister Najib Razak flew into northern state of Penang at 9am Saturday for a day-long visit to the state.

About 1,000 people braved the rain to greet Najib and his delegation at the Penang International Airport, among them Penang Barisan Nasional (BN) chairman Dr Koh Tsu Koon and Penang United Malays National Organisation (Umno) Liaison Committee chairman Zainal Abidin Osman.

Najib met and chatted with about 500 taxi drivers, heard a briefing on the problems faced by taxi drivers in the state, accepted a memorandum from Penang Taxi Drivers Federation chairman Abdul Malik Darus and stuck a 1Malaysia sticker on a taxi.

The prime minister then went on a walkabout at the wet markets in Taman Tun Sardon in Gelugor, Jelutong, Kampung Melayu and Padang Tembak.

He is scheduled to attend a lunch with the people in the compound of a mosque, an event expected to draw more than 15,000 people of various races.

Najib, who is also BN chairman, is scheduled to meet Penang BN leaders at the Tabung Haji Complex and catch up with his Facebook friends at the Equatorial Hotel.

He is also scheduled to attend an Indian cultural carnival at the Penang International Sports Arena (PISA) and a dinner organised by the Penang Football Association before flying back to Kuala Lumpur at 11pm.
