PERTAMINA PETROL STORAGE TANK AT REFINERY ON FIRE

By Ahmad Fuad Yahya

JAKARTA, April 2 (Bernama) -- A petrol storage tank of a refinery of Indonesia's national oil company Pertamina in central Java was on fire early Saturday, but there have no reports yet of casualties.

The tank, at Cilacap, was ablaze at 4.30am and television footage showed the flames shooting up as high as 80 metres and thick, black smoke billowing from the facility.

As at noon, fire-fighters had managed to keep the flames from spreading to other tanks and were struggling to extinguish the fire, which has struck fear in people although they were living quite far from the refinery.

Nevertheless, the authorities have advised the people to keep a safe distance of at least one kilometre away from the fire.

The KOMPAS.com news portal quoted a spokesman of the Pertamina refinery as saying that an explosion triggered the fire but the cause had yet to be determined.

A 39,000-kilolitre capacity tank 20 to 24 metres in diameter and 17 metres high was on fire. It reportedly contained petrol but not at capacity. The refinery has four tanks, including the one ablaze.

Pertamina Vice President for Corporate Communications M. Harun reportedly said that the fire did not disrupt the company's supply of fuel and that the refinery was operating as usual.
