PM NAJIB URGE GRADUATES TO 'GIVE BACK' TO THEIR UNIVERSITIES
KUALA LUMPUR, April 4 (Bernama) -- Prime Minister Najib Razak Sunday urged graduates to contribute back to their universities after completing their studies.
"Members of alumni must return the favour to universities that had helped pave the way to their success," he said when speaking at the University of Malaya Alumni Association dinner themed ‘UM Alumni with the PRIME MINISTER’ here Sunday.
The University of Malaya Alumni Association (PAUM) under the patronage of Rosmah Mansor had organized the gala fund raising dinner with the theme, to help raise funds to finance the PAUM Clubhouse Project.
"The best example is the Harvard University established in 1636, the oldest University in America, named after John Harvard, an individual who donated his library and half of his fortunes to the university when he died.
"Today the endowment of Harvard University is worth US$27 billion, the biggest endowment fund in America, far more than any other universities in that country and miles ahead of the second placed university, Yale University with US$16 billion," he said.
During the dinner, the Prime Minister launched a "Alumni Roll of
Honour" project that will recognise donors and contributions made to PAUM by displaying their names at the clubhouse according to their range of contributions.
"Now UM is said to be a 'trusted brand' and labelled as 'primus inter pares' among public universities in Malaysia," he said.
However, UM cannot rest on its laurels because other universities would be aiming to overcome their achievements.
Meanwhile, Rosmah said the clubhouse to be build on a 1.3 hectare site at a cost of RM11 million would be ready by March 2012 and start operations by mid-2012. (US$1=RM3.02)
